Quick Eats – Seasalt

Dec30

Restaurant: Seasalt Fish Grill

Location: 9901 Washington Blvd #101, Culver City, CA 90232. (424) 361-5222

Date: December 12, 2016

Cuisine: Poke

Rating: Very flat

_

I was excited (apparently prematurely) by the opening of this new Poke place just a block from Ramen Roll. By the time I got there it had been open a whole week or two.

Well, actually it was a tempered mix of feelings, on one hand having another quick tasty spot nearby would be convenient, on the other, poke is vaguely competitive with our concept — although after trying, I’m not at all worried.

Seasalt is very much a QSR (Quick Service Restaurant). You order at the counter and sit. The menu is a mix of poke and (mostly fried) fish. It’s actually a slightly odd mix.

The poke is sitting in tubs in that display counter. It looks non too fresh.

The decor is nice enough, although sloppy in style. Kinda says not much of anything.

Ahi Poke Salad. Fresh Ahi Poke, mixed greens, romaine, tomatoes, cucumber, edamame, sesame, avocado, carrots, green onion and a lemon ginger dressing.

Kitchen sink!
California Poke Salad. Fresh Ahi Poke, sweet shrimp and surimi crabmeat, mixed greens, tomatoes, cucumber, avocado, carrots and lemon ginger dressing.

When I read something like sweet shrimp and surimi crabmeat I think real seafood. Do you see any shrimp? I just see imitation crab. In any case, this bowl had the typical muddle of flavors that is typical of why I don’t like poke. The rice was limp and flavorless, and then there is just a bunch of mush on top of it that tastes like dressing and mediocre fish.  Just so sloppy both visually and in terms of flavor balance.

Because of its proximity, I’ll come back and try something else — maybe. I’m not really keen too, but I feel I should give it a second chance with a different type of item. Although farm raised Tilapia is not going to lure me in!

Sweetfin Poké – Not Getting It

Oct14

Restaurant: Sweetfin Poké

Location: 829 Broadway, Santa Monica, CA 90401.  (310) 395-1097

Date: October 7, 2016

Cuisine: Poké

Rating: Better than what I’ve had before, but not that exciting

_

This is my second trip to a pure Poké shop. I mean, I’ve had Poké in Hawaii, and I’ve had a tremendous amount of sushi, but this whole “Poké joint” thing is fairly new — if a huge trend as they seem to be everywhere now.

Located right on Broadway just a couple blocks back from the Promenade. Too far to walk, but it didn’t stop the crowds (which must be fairly local) from showing.

The menu system is on the board. Here you pick from more curated bowls or build your own in a less assembly line fashion than the other one I went to: Poke Express.

The crowd was huge on this random Friday at 12:30.

Spicy Yuzu Salmon. yuzu kosho sauce, edamame, lime. Like everyone else I added crispy onions (and cucumbers). It was okay. Certainly better than the Poke Express mess of flavors. More in balance. But still, the rice was a little weird. I prefer straight sushi rice. And the whole thing didn’t have a TON of flavor. A good chirasi bowl is way better. This was a large. It wasn’t large. The small was tiny.
 Horchata. Odd with poké.

I’m not sure I get the whole poké thing. Don’t get me wrong, I love raw fish, but these combinations are a bit odd and everything either tastes like dressing or not much at all. It’s fine, but nothing exciting. Why’s it so popular? Maybe because it’s “cheap” and vaguely sushi-like? Maybe because the quick serve format is appealingly fast? Maybe people think it’s healthy (should be reasonably so)? I dunno. I certainly don’t really crave it.

Poke Express

Sep28

Restaurant: Poke Express by Handa-Ya

Location: 316 E 2nd St. Los Angeles, CA 90012. Little Tokyo, Downtown. (213) 628-3665

Date: September 21, 2016

Cuisine: Pole

Rating: Sloppy but cheap

_

This is actually my first visit to a full on Poke place — sure I’ve had poke in Hawaii, and in all sorts of other specific occasions, but not at one of this new crop of Poke exclusive places.

Poke Express by Hando-Ya (not the car) is located right near Sushi Gen and the like in Little Tokyo.

Typical looking QSR (Quick Serve Restaurant) — much like a Subway.

The format is actually a lot like a dessert bar or snow place like Salju.

You basically pick a base (rice, salad, noodles) and then they dump on it a selection of toppings and proteins of your choice. These are the proteins (tuna, salmon etc).

Then toppings.

And more toppings — slightly confusingly divided into different categories.  However, for your base price you get a ton of them. A few like crab are extra.  Plus there are sauces.

Then a self serve toppings bar with dried onion, garlic, sesame seed etc.

Wasabi and ginger (looking non-too-fresh) and the omnipresent siracha and “spicy mayo”.

Here is one of our creations.

And a separate one.

These things are cheap, maybe $11-13 bucks typically before tax. How do they taste?  Hmmm. Disorganized and sloppy. Not bad, but nothing went together. First off the rice isn’t great sushi rice — which is delicious by itself. This was pretty loose. Then nothing had too much flavor except for the tangy dressing and the spicy mayo. It would take great care and skill to construct a “harmonious” blend. Instead I’m sure more people end up with a works type approach like we did. Didn’t really taste like much.

Works much better for Salju or Frozen Yogurt.
