The Hobbit Trailer

Dec21

Nerdgasm update. If you can’t wait for December 14, they’ve released a second Hobbit trailer:

I can see them trying to squeeze every last bit of “bigness” out of what’s in the book. The Hobbit — brilliant that it is — was written before everything had to be designed for the trailer!

And if you missed the first, more serious one:

The feeling of the prequel going second is interesting. It looks great, but it also feels slightly anticlimactic (for those of us who know the stories in detail) following on Return of the King. But still, it might actually be a more fun film(s) — the book is a little better paced than the masterpiece — which brilliant as it is, is a bit odd in the structural department. Don’t get me wrong though, I have read them half a dozen times. :-) Even the Silmarillion, which is actually one of my favorites. Although I can’t say I’ve read all of those extra lost tales whatever books Christopher Tolkien pushed on us (a few though).

Also check out this silly Hobbit themed Air New Zealand flight video.

I was both excited and a bit disapppointed by this trailer. When I read the Hobbit as a kid, it had a more light-hearted and ‘fun’ atomsphere about it, as opposed to LoTR, which had a more ‘serious’ atmosphere. While the LoTR movies nailed that down, I’m a bit concerned it might lose that light heartedness of it.

BUT: Light hearted or serious, I still think this will be a great film, Peter Jackson and co have clearly shown with LoTR how to make an awesome adaptation, and the fact that they’re making it in two movies bodes well. Although I also can’t help but wonder how the movie would’ve been had Guillermo Del Toro stayed on.

    Thoughts Andy?

With Guillermo it probably would had been darker and weirder — don’t get me wrong, I love his stuff, and Pan’s Lab. Is one of the best films of the last 10 years. But he is weird :-)

Wow…looks great! Although, I think that many people who haven’t read the book yet will be victim of another Fantasy-trend in which I was absorbed too, between 2001-2003, when I saw Jackson’s LoTR adaptation. Then, I started reading, in 2006, the Book of Lost Tales – part I and, following, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, The Book of Lost Tales – part II, Childern of Hurin and The Unfinished Tales. I discovered another Tokien, and another Middle-Earth. The world told about in the books is not the earth that is background to the events of the film, but is, together with Aman, a mythological view of our world, a solid background to a legendary interpretation of our history and, most of all, the result of a great knowledge Professor Tolkien had of many aspects of Gaelic, Finnish, Anglo-saxon and Midde-Age  languages and cultures. And I think that, though the LoTR movies are great and this new one seems fascinating, they absolutely cannot compete with the greatness and depth of Arda’s mythology.

Can you imagine the Silmarillion the movie? haha

I have thought about it sometimes :D … just curious about how they would represent the Ainulindale and the Valars!!!

I havent read the LotR books and probably  never will, for some reason i cant read a book after watching the film and vice versa, probably because i dont want to be dissapointed at something. But i really enjoyed the LotR films and will watch The Hobbit with pleasure.

What really makes me uneasy about it is that they chose Martin Freeman, Its probably only me, but i consider him a terribad actor, he’s one of the main reasons I prefer the american version of The Office.

      I’ve never seen him

I’ve read the LoTR books (minus Silmarillion) twice now, once in junior high and then another several years ago. While I respect the work, I’m just not a fan of Tolkien’s writing style. It’s dry, and dare I say boring compared to what writers of our generation have given us. To date, my favorite writer hands down is Robert Jordan who gave us exceptional Conan stories and another enduring series comparable with Tolkien’s in the Wheel of Time. If only the Wheel of Time could be made into movies. Considering there’s what 14 books in the series, the movies would probably take a life time to complete.

I loved the first 4-5 WOT books – but the story stretched out too far after that. I couldn’t even remember characters by the time they rotated around. http://all-things-andy-gavin.com/2010/10/24/the-gathering-storm/ It would be impossible as a film, or at least terrible. Way too complex. If you had a big enough budget you could make a TV series out of it, but unless it was done at high production values with a VERY good team (like Game of Thrones) it would like be terrible like The Legend of the Seeker.
Tolkien is a little slow by today’s standard, but I even loved the Simarillion :-) Read A Game of Thrones if you haven’t!

Can’t wait. And for the other person that won’t read tolken because of seeing a movie is missing more in the literature. The movie at least helps you imagine the creatures and characters more. Thank you Mr. Jackson. The Hobbit is the only book I read in my youth. That was worth reading.
