Naughty Dog – 25 Years!

Dec23

www.vg247.com has written a very nice piece on Naughty Dog’s 25th anniversary.

There’s been a few anniversaries in the gaming world this past year: Ubisoft’s 25th, Blizzard’s 20th. But it seems there may have been one that slipped under the radar, which is a big surprise considering this studio is now perhaps one of the most widely-recognised on the triple-A scene.

Naughty Dog is 25 years old this year.

But all things have an origin.

Jamming, man

In 1986, high school students Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin joined forces to found what was then known as Jam Software. The pair had been experimenting with computer programming, tooling around with C++, before combining their talents.

But it was in 1989 that the first seeds of the company as we know it today were sown. Making a new beginning, Jam Software was renamed Naughty Dog, with EA-published RPG Keel The Thief for Apple IIGS, Amiga and PC the first release under the new moniker. Its next effort, Rings of Power for the Genesis or Mega Drive, arrived in 1991 – another RPG published by EA.

And in 1994, Naughty Dog developed a 3DO fighting title for the now defunct Universal Interactive Studios (better known in recent years as Vivendi Games) called Way of the Warrior, with both single-play and multiplayer.

Based on Way of the Warrior’s success, Mark Cerny, then head of Universal Interactive Studios, agreed to back the company’s next games. What came afterwards signaled the beginning of Naughty Dog’s true success.

“Whoa!”

In 1996, with a distribution deal secured, Naughty Dog released a unique platformer called Crash Bandicoot. It was published by the fresh-faced Sony Computer Entertainment, which had released its debut console, the PlayStation, over 1994 and 1995.

Despite a few errors (our first game was actually published in 1985) this is a nice article with lots of good stuff and some fun videos from the different eras. Check out the full text here.

Naughty Dog gave me so many of my childhood memories. Really looking forward to their new game! Wish they had the rights to Crash though… I want another good one.

Naughty Dog is older than me? That’s kinda crazy.

It just amazes me what progress they’ve made. From Crash (my first ND adventure) to the cinematic adventures of Drake.

Also, thought you were staunchly against the memory mess of C++? :P Although, it does make me ask, prior to Crash, were the other ND/Jam Software games in some version of LISP?

    • http://all-things-andy-gavin.com Andy Gavin

I used regular C for Dream Zone, Keef, and Rings. For Rings some of the tools were written in C++, but not the game (just C and assembly). Even using C and not ALL assembly on the Genesis was considered bold! It was during college that my eyes were opened to more advanced solutions. By way of the warrior the AI was in a LISP dialect I wrote.

Any chances of getting Rings of Power on the Wii Shop or possibly the PSN? Otherwise I’ll have to pick up a Genesis and order Rings of Power on eBay or something.

        • http://all-things-andy-gavin.com Andy Gavin

I think Rings is sadly pretty forgotten

Shame Naughty dogs IPs seem to be getting darker and darker, If you and Jason were still there would that the direction you would have taken?

whilst at Naughty dog did you ever ask Sony if they could do a deal with vivendi for you to create a Crash bandicoot PS2 game? If it worked with Universal, It might have worked with vivendi as well.

    • http://all-things-andy-gavin.com Andy Gavin

The IP was already getting “darker” while we were there. Jak->Jak2 etc. Would we have done EXACTLY the same thing? I doubt it, but Uncharted is a really awesome series of games anywhichway you cut it.

Hi Andy, I would just like to ask you some questions:

    1) At the end of Jak and Daxter The Precursor Legacy when Samos was saying that Gol and Maia were PROBABLY gone, were you guys thinking of bringing them back for a future Jak game?

    2) What are your thoughts on the Jak and Daxter Collection coming out this February for PS3?

    3) And lastly, do you reckon that Naughty Dog will make a Jak 4?(hopefully not another company as only Naughty Dog can make a great Jak game IMO). I have some reasons why I think they will make a Jak 4:

•Naughty Dog are helping on making the Jak and Daxter Collection which might be to relieve their memories or by making sure it is done right to bring in more people to the Jak series getting ready for a sequel.

•As Naughty Dog have split up into two teams and one is working on The Last of Us (Which looks very good), what is the other team working on? Hopefully a Jak 4 but there is some talk about an Uncharted 4 for the upcoming PS4 which would be good no doubt but.. Jak and Daxter is still better.

•And finally, all other HD Collections have been getting sequels such as Sly 4, Tomb Raider 2012, God of War 3 etc so could this be a clue?

And thanks for making Jak and Daxter happen, my favourite games of all time and ever will be. :’)

And Congrats on being a major part of Naughty Dogs History! :D

      1) we were leaving open the possibility. They were kinda lame villains though, compared to Cortex.
      2) Cool! I wrote a whole post on it, search on the blog.
      3) I have no idea. That would be cool, but both Crash and Uncharted were ultimately more successful franchises…
      4) They are probably making the collection because with the dropped emulation on the PS3 it makes sense to try and bring those games to new players.
      5) I can’t comment.
      6) It seems (from the outside) to be a policy of Sony’s to bring their hit 1st party franchises up to date for the PS3.

      You are very welcome!

      • Jack Barrington

Oh sorry Andy, I didn’t mean for you to answer the bit about what the other team are working on. Just my reasonms why I thought they could make it but anyway Thanks!
