Jak & Daxter Collection

Nov22

I’m happy to announce that Jak & Daxter will make its PS3 debut this February with the launch of the Jak and Daxter Collection. This is an awesome way for a new generation of gamers to experience (or re-experience) three of Naughty Dog‘s PS2 masterpieces.

The Jak and Daxter Collection features three classic Jak and Daxter titles – Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Jak II, and Jak 3 – all three of which I lead programmed and co-directed, were written in my awesome GOAL programming language, and totally kicked ass. They were remastered by Mass Media, working closely with the team at Naughty Dog. With the launch of Jak and Daxter Collection, you’ll be able to experience the adventures of Jak and his Daxter in 720p high definition with crisper visuals, smoother gameplay animation, and in full stereoscopic 3D. And, I’m sure all of you hardcore collectors will be happy to hear that each game in the trilogy features full PS3 trophy support!

The Jak and Daxter franchise set a benchmark for the platformer genre with its amazing storytelling, huge environments, no loading, and gaming freedom. In fact, it holds seven world records in the Guinness World Records: Gamer’s Edition 2008 including the First Seamless 3D World in a Console Game. If you can believe it, the Jak and Daxter franchise will be celebrating its 10th anniversary this year on December 4th! An amazing amount of effort and talent from the entire Naughty Dog team, went into these babies over six long years, and they can all be yours on one little blu-ray!

[ NOTE: the content of this post is partially -- ahem, largely -- purloined from the Playstation blog. ]

So did they emulate the VU and EE (I guess Sony already has code for that …) or did they retarget the GOAL compiler? :)

    • http://all-things-andy-gavin.com Andy Gavin

I don’t actually know. I’d have to ask Christophe how it came out (we chatted about some strategies when they started).

    • its_not_a_me_mario

VU is just am FPU proccessor and the ps3 by itself has enough power to even handle a software wraper around it.
Same goes with EE which they probably implemented an opengl renderer.

As for GOAL there shouldn’t be any trouble re-writing the scripts to a totally different scripting language ;) .

      Sources : Personal experience.

      • http://all-things-andy-gavin.com Andy Gavin

Uh no, with regard to GOAL. EVERYTHING in Jak1-3 is written in GOAL, including all sorts of inline vector assembly. GOAL isn’t a scripting language either, but a full scheme implementation compiled to R5900 object code.
According to Christophe, they just emulated the processor (and hence the object code).

        • its_not_a_me_mario

That sounds very interesting.May i ask if there is any stricly-technical white paper/doc about your compiler ?

          • http://all-things-andy-gavin.com Andy Gavin

There are a whole bunch on my hard drive, and I keep meaning to format them into HTML and post them — they’re long and this is considerable work — but I haven’t yet :-) I will eventually.

Please do,  I would love to read up on GOAL. It sounds pretty impressive!

I’m so glad!! Dear Andy, is there a way to convince Naughty Dog guys that they should, maybe they must!, create the long-awaited Jak 4 on ps3? I know they have their own plans, but, on the other hand, I don’t think the market needs an Uncharted 4, and times are so early to switch to ps4. Then, a Jak4 should be perfect! Don’t you think? All wants a PS3 Jak, and they don’t. :( (Of course, I don’t want a Not-ND Jak)Greetings from italy! :D

    • its_not_a_me_mario

They must , although not without Andy and Jason.

  • StargamerX

Can you offer any insight as to why Jak X will not be included in the collection?

    • http://all-things-andy-gavin.com Andy Gavin

I would guess because the tech was pretty different wih multiplayer and all

      • StargamerX

Yeah, I suppose.  These were some of… er… are still my favorite games of all-time, and am glad Jak and Daxter are finally making it to the PS3. I’ve been waiting since 2004 for Jak 4 (my Jak 3 poster still hangs in my room, it never came down) :)

I will probably get this, really loved the jack and daxter trilogy and I hope they do a 4 but more in the style of the first game :)

  • Gabriele

Andy, do you know that Sony is working on his version of the game Super Smash Bors, and that Jack and Daxter are confirmed to be in the game?

  • http://www.twitter.com/KaizerAllen Kaizer Allen

If for example, Naughty Dog or Sony gets the rights to the Crash Bandicoot franchise once again, do you think it is likely to have a mash-up kind of game with Jak and Daxter?

  • Msmma

Im hoping (as was the case with Sly Cooper Collection) that each Jak game here will have its own trophy list and platinum, and when you get all 3 platinums it will unlock a teaser trailer for a new Jak and Daxter!!! (like they did with the teaser trailer for the new Sly)   :)

  • Wild SpiRiT

Naughty Dog i Love you!!! it will be only for ps3 or maybe for ps2 too?

    • http://all-things-andy-gavin.com Andy Gavin

Only ps3. The originals still run great on ps 2

  • NovelsOnTheRun

    Hey Andy,

My 15 yr old son wants me to ask you if you guys will ever do more in Jak and Daxter series in future.  I saw below something about franchise?? Not sure if you guys have it anymore? Jesse is just asking me to ask you, so I am. I was showing him the vid I have on my interview  :D

Is about as close an answer as is available.

The best games i’ve ever played !

  • dmc1234

This is a bit of a far fetched question, but if you ever make another Jak and Daxter game, would it continue from Jak 3 or from The Lost Frontier?
